Bareedo Platform appreciates the wider consultation process already employed by the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) which was recently re-established by the president and the parliament in a way instructed by an annex to the constitution.
We believe that TPEC’s engagement with society, journalists, religious groups, traditional elders and citizens over plans of moving from a clan-based form of governance to democracy will produce collective commitment and success of democratisation process in Puntland.
Participation is a right held by all people to engage in society and in the decisions that impact their lives. Participation is thus an effort that challenges oppression and discrimination, in particular of the poorest and most marginalised people. Participatory processes enable people to identify opportunities and have inputs in the democratisation process in Puntland.
Bareedo Platform encourages TPEC to continue and stick to the culture of engagement of civil society, journalists and citizens in the democratisation process as well as the development of electoral procedures.
